Tom Mitchell, vice president of marketing for Aeonian Brick Homes, explains the finer points of the Summerville company’s flagship product Monday.

An upstart Summerville company has taken the brick, an item so synonymous with the color red that it boasts its own crayon color, and made it “green.” Aeonian Brick Homes started producing its eco-friendly, steam-cured bricks on West 5th North Street about a year ago. Unlike conventional bricks, which require high amounts of energy to be fired, Aeonian’s bricks are compressed blocks of dirt, clay, some cement and a proprietary formula, said Tom Mitchell, vice president of marketing. Founder Don Blalock relocated from Florida because of the high-quality local clay and because South Carolina is conducive to new building products, Mitchell said. On Monday, Aeonian broke ground on a one-acre lot on West Butternut Avenue where it will build the first home using its own bricks. The house, which will serve as a training center for the company’s building system, will be left incomplete in parts so contractors can see how the bricks are assembled, Mitchell said. Florida-based Davis and Cleaton Engineering tested and certified the bricks for home construction in 34 states. The company claims its flagship interlocking brick is waterproof, fireproof, insect-proof, soundproof, mold- and mildew-proof and able to withstand hurricanes or tornados with winds up to 240 mph. Mitchell said the brick is being tested for earthquake durability Aug. 13 in Maryland. “I’m not advocating people ride out a storm in their house, but if you had no choice, this would be the one you would want to be stuck in,” he said. The company claims to be the only brick manufacturer in the U.S. that produces a waterproof brick that does not require the application of a sealant. Blalock used to be an insurance claims adjuster and created the waterproof brick in response the high number of water damage claims he saw, Mitchell said. Mitchell said the price of an Aeonian home is comparable to concrete block or wood frame homes and the bricks can be given several looks, including a wood grain.

Science, Research and Technology, have always ruled and made corporations and nations richer. Most in Sub-Saharan Africa were slow in catching up with the Industrial, Electric, Electronic, Software Revolutions, and NanoTechnology. However, some of them have been seizing on the current chance to catch up with the quiet revolution in Construction Technology.

In the construction of shopping malls, pavements, architectural structures, foundations, highways/roads, overpasses, parking structures, brick/block walls and footings for gates, fences and poles, buildings and runways, cement has been the major component. However, cement is very expensive as a binder, a substance which sets and hardens independently, and can bind other materials together. The most important use of cement is the production of mortar and concrete – the bonding of natural or artificial aggregates to form a strong building material which is durable in the face of normal environmental effects. There have been many problems with cement. Cement Blocks crack, and are not fire nor water proof, leading to mold mildew, and termite problems. They are also weak in tensile strength, thus requiring Rebar (Iron Rods).

Over the last 20 years, researchers and engineers have been quietly using many alternatives that are far superior in strength, are environmentally friendlier to save our planet, reduce energy costs to land developers and home owners by using compressed earth bricks (CEBs) and clay. “Quietly” because the cement industry, like the oil industry, is powerful, well entrenched and resist changes that threaten their profits.

In places like South Africa, Canada, China and the Philippines, CEBs have accelerated development and economic growth with lower cost production bricks. Many such companies are now gaining acceptance in places like Ghana and wining contracts to develop residential communities, schools and hospitals.

One advantage of CEBs is that they tend to use most of the earth (mud) right from the site, and with some clay and small amounts of patented chemicals, use special but simple machines to produce the blocks on site, thus eliminating the transportation costs of importing cement. Since they are earth based they possess the properties of mud houses in the villages of Ghana, the same concept behind the “cooler” flask that keeps water cool. It keeps the heat out during the day and retains the warmth inside at nite, thus reducing heating and air-conditioning costs by more than 50%.

In the USA, with some serious climatic conditions like Hurricanes and Floods in Florida, Earthquakes and Forest Fires in California, when engineers at Aeonian Brick Homes heard about CEBs they went to South Africa, China, Ghana, and Canada, to see what they were doing with CEBs, and had more drastic conditions in mind. They also had some stringent state certification and approval requirements to pass.

After 3 years and almost a million dollars in a research facility, using state of the art technology and testing procedures, they developed the Aeonian Brick which was certified for use in 34 US states. This process can sometimes take up to 10years with new technologies. The US Dept of Energy is trying to build a zero energy home by 2020 and they are interested in these bricks. They offered free testing at Oakridge for insulation values that were not even required by the 34 states to test for because AEONIAN wanted to reduce energy costs significantly, but not by 100%! This recognition by the Federal Government is a worthy indicator to the quality of a product.

They currently have a long list of orders on schools and customized homes, both in the USA and West Africa. Apart from the many advantages, like environmental and thermal, the bottom line is COSTS, and they build their homes and commercial facilities with huge savings from traditional project estimates.

Their technology is ideal for the current construction boom in developing countries and they have had many Land Developers from abroad visit , inspect, test their bricks before submitting orders to build.

Aeonian Technology handles Floods and Fires easily. It also does not require Rebar (Iron Rods), Mortar, Dry Wall and a host of other Processes that make current methods cumbersome and expensive. The Interlocking Feature of the blocks creates a Monolithic Structure. Unique Design allows easy insertion of Pipes, Fiber Optic and Electric wires.

The Aeonian Brick Total Building System offers:

· Interlocking Blocks that do not use mortar or plaster for structural strength

· High Finish Design & Aesthetics

· Speedier Construction

· Simplicity of Use

· Cost Efficient

· High Quality Product

· Environmentally Friendly – No firing of Bricks required

· Training and technical support

· Can be used without plastering

· Suitable for earth quake resistant construction

· Local unskilled labor can be used for construction of building shell

· Built in chase for electrical wires and plumbing

Aeonian Bricks developed with state of the art high tech methods, under more stringent US requirements, and did international research and cooperating to ultimately came out with superior products, at over 3000p.s.i, addresses all issues, especially strength and structural integrity, from residential communities to land developers with hundreds of acres for shopping malls. They also offer their our own Hurricane Proof Roofing Systems and are looking into Solar and Wind Power for homes.

Further savings in building costs are from the use of very few skilled personnel who can train more unskilled labor in a few days to complete projects.

Those that recognize the evolution in technology and take quick action are those that gain the most. Inertia is the drag that keeps others stuck in the old ways that are no longer economically viable.

They have designed an amazing new clay-based, interlocking brick that is waterproof, fireproof, insect-proof, soundproof, mold and mildew-proof, insulates the home, saves energy and best of all; it’s the greenest construction material that exists on the market today.

Their system allows homes to be built faster and stronger. Rather than bond the bricks with mortar, they use a construction adhesive (much like liquid nails) which bonds to the brick, not just sticks to it. Once the bricks are glued together, they form a monolithic wall, much like a poured concrete wall.

The clay in their bricks is treated with a non toxic, environmentally friendly chemical that neutralizes the polarity of the clay molecule, making the clay essentially waterproof because there is no electrical charge to attract and hold the water molecule.

SUMMERVILLE, S.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–InventHelp’s INPEX®, America’s Largest Invention Trade Show, announced several award winners at the closing awards dinner for the 25th anniversary show. All of the inventions were exhibited June 16-18, at the new Monroeville Convention Center, minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The show attracts buyers from major corporations, investor groups and venture capitalists.
Awards were presented in categories ranging from advertising to transportation as well as special awards from corporations and individuals. An international jury judges the inventions.
Don Blalock, founder of Aeonian Brick Homes and inventor of the Aeonian Brick, won the following special awards:
¥ Gold Medal for the Construction Category
¥ Gold Medal from the Malaysian Invention and Design Society
¥ Grand Prix Award, Best Invention for 2010

Aeonian Brick Homes (http://Aeonianbricks.com) manufactures an interlocking, compressed earth brick for the exterior and interior walls of a home or any other type of building. The bricks are waterproof at a molecular level and will never expand or contract. They are 2 • times stronger than concrete blocks and very dense, making them smooth to the touch with edges never before seen on a brick or block. Homes built with the bricks will be able to withstand 240 mph wind pressures with no damage. There is no drywall or wood in the home, so it is flood and fireproof inside and out. Homes built with the bricks will save 50-60% on energy costs with the R-45 thermal mass of the bricks. Termites are no longer a problem and the home is soundproof from outside noise and even room to room noise. The finished home will cost no more than a wood frame home. This interlocking designed brick is part of a complete home building system that is poised to revolutionize the home building industry and provide green residential homes that will be LEED certified at the GOLD or PLATINUM LEVEL!
Don Blalock, Founder of Aeonian Brick Homes, LLC, and a contractor for 35 years, has been involved in the research and development of this new brick for the past seven years.
Aeonian Brick Homes founder Don Blalock was honored at the Invention & New Product Exposition — known as Inpex — held June 16-18 near Pittsburgh.

Blalock took home the following honors from the internationally juried exhibition:

Gold medal in the construction category

Gold medal from the Malaysian Invention and Design Society

Grand Prix award for best invention of 2010

The show attracts buyers from major corporations, investor groups and venture capitalists.

Aeonian creates an interlocking, compressed earth brick that, according to the company, is 2.5 times stronger than concrete blocks and can be used for exterior and interior walls — eliminating the need for drywall and wood in the home.

In effect, homes built from the material are more flood-proof and fireproof than other homes and can withstand winds up to 240 miles per hour, the company said.

Along with fire, water and wind, the energy-efficient Aeonian bricks are also barriers against sound and termites. The company says homes built with the bricks will be able to qualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification at the gold or platinum level.

Blalock has been a contractor for 35 years and has been involved in the research and development of the specialty bricks for the past seven years.

While people scurry to devise new green components for homes, Don Blalock is in the enviable position of launching one that he’s been nursing along for the last six years.

His Aeonian brick will build houses that are significantly more energy efficient than conventional homes; help them qualify for LEED platinum certification and withstand hurricane force winds up to 240 mph. They’ll also resist heat, mold, mildew and termites, says Blalock, whose goal is to build “the most structurally sound house that’s livable (and) that will last for a very long time.”

Blalock, a onetime music teacher and 35-year veteran of the construction business, knows he sounds like someone peddling a secret sauce on an infomerical – “But wait! There’s more! We’ll throw in termite and fire protection with your durable new home!”

But he explains that he simply set out to build a better brick, one that would repel the water damage he repeatedly saw while overseeing reconstruction of houses for State Farm Insurance. Seven out of 10 homeowner claims involved water damage, from an array of sources including leaky pipes. Water damage led to mold “explosions” inside walls on receptive drywall and wood supports, compounding the damage and the indoor air quality.

Experimenting with brick, he says he developed a chemical process that tinkered with the molecular properties of clay to make it intrinsically more water resistant — creating a product able to leap over concrete block as a useful building base (and compete with sealed brick as a viable exterior).

“In a normal stick home, you don’t get the thermal energy mass you do with this,” said Stahl, whose company is launching a green building incubator program called Eco Sustainable Systems.com. Aeonian Brick, he says, has “huge potential” to protect homeowners from escalating electrical bills — as well as hurricanes and termites.

Can Brick Be Green?

Brick has been known to last for the ages. In desert climates, ancient ruins made of bricks have largely survived. But in wet areas, fired clay bricks erode and can absorb water that can nurture mold and mildew issues in a home.

Aeonian brick homes will keep mold out, Blalock says, and be revolutionary in other ways, too, starting with how they’re built. The smooth, 8x8x4-inch bricks are made from compressed clay that’s been precision-molded and fit seamlessly together, like Legos. The bricks form the house’s exterior surface and serve as frame, insulation and drywall. Electrical wiring and plumbing are embedded during construction. The result is a nearly airtight, water-resistant structure that Blalock hopes to see embraced by builders in hot, humid and hurricane-prone areas.

The key is the material and their tight fit. “This material is so precise I can make a brick today and I can make a brick next year, both will be within 1/100 of an inch,” Blalock says.

Even though the bricks use regular clay, which takes resources from the earth, the process is greener than traditional brick production. Regular bricks must be fired at high temperatures over an extended period of time (many days) whereas Aeonian brick is molded and steam cured, replicating ancient processes and using far less electricity.

It also claims green points for removing the need for stick framing, saving trees. More green savings accrue by subtracting the drywall. The price for all this? About the same as for conventional building, Blalock estimates, because the savings in multiple materials make up for the costs of the unique new brick.

The bricks are formed like compressed earth products, but perform better because the clay is altered with a chemical that makes the clay water resistant. The catalyst is derived from oil slag, but Blalock swears it’s non-toxic (and claims competitive privilege in concealing the formula). The petroleum byproduct involved has been tested in other uses and proven to be safe, he says, noting that the Aeonian process makes use of waste material.

“This is the essence of recycling. This is recycling something you want to get rid of that the companies
are having a hard time getting rid of.”

The houses can be scored, molded and painted to blend in completely with an existing neighborhood. The paint bonds to the material, inside and out, and will not require repainting, he promises. These houses won’t look weird, Blalock says, and can be made to look “exactly” like other homes in the area. (Which may or may not be a good thing.)
